The Commanding Officer (Pat Butler) of the 1st Battalion Illinois Young Marines' was able to get her employer Mr. Timothy Slater to cover the cost of the airfare for 8 Young Marines and four staff members. Furthermore, her employer covered the cost of transportation while the group was in the Washington, DC area for one week. Mrs. Butler scheduled a very diverse trip. The group arrived in Washington, DC on Tuesday and right after picking up their transportation was enroute to Arlington Cemetery. While there, the group was able to see President John F. Kennedy's grave site, Women in Military Service Memorial, and the U.S. Marine Corps' Sunset Parade. The Battalion Commander was able to get a Quonset hut for the group to call home during their stay at Marine Corps Base Quantico (history of MCBQ) The next day started out at 0530 at the base chow hall. After filling up, we were on the road to Washington for another outstanding day. The group's first stop was at the Institute of Learning for an outstanding two hour briefing on Thunder Run. After the briefing, the group was on the move again. This time the group went to the new WW II Memorial, Korea Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial. But the day was not over, after visiting the memorials the group was on the run to the Army's Twilight Tattoo Parade. The Army did an outstanding job of showing the different American Uniforms from the early days to today's uniforms...OORAH! During the parade, they also showed the different state flags.
